Rewire Your Milano Fan to Run After the Engine is Turned Off
by Rich Hirsch
It's relatively easy to rewire the Milano cooling fan to run after the engine is shut off. As to why one would want to do this, see the article Thermosyphoning and Heat Soak Effects. The engine cooling fan circuit is fairly simple--see Figure 2.
The fuse/switch/coil are part of the engine cooling fan relay, designated I1, which is mounted on the inside fender wall near the airbox.
To rewire the fan so its still controlled by the thermal switch, but operates independently of the ignition switch, all you have to do is run a wire to I1s coil from a 12v source not controlled by the ignition switch. This is easy to do since there is a continuously powered +12v connector near I1.
To modify the wiring so the cooling fan will run with the engine off:
- Find the four-wire connector near the airbox on the passenger side that contains the wires as shown in Figure 1.
- Remove the male spade connector attached to the pink wire from the 4-wire connector (this can be done by bending down a small metal tab on the spade connector with a tiny screw driver and pulling on the wire).
- Make a jumper wire about 10 inches long with a ring connector on one end and a female spade connector on the other end.
- Plug the just disconnected male connector attached to the pink wire into the jumper wire's spade connector and attach the ring connector to the continuously powered +12v terminal connector located near the airbox. This terminal is covered with a plastic cap. Make sure you insulate all connections. The final circuit is shown in Figure 3.
